SOPEP REGULATIONS
Depending on the trading area in which a ship operates, different SOPEP regulations apply.
In all cases, the regulations of the port state apply worldwide.

1. MARPOL 73/78 Annex I (Regulation 26*)
2. Under the PANAMA CANAL SOPEP, the ship must carry SOPEP equipment ready to contain operational discharges.
3. Under the CALIFORNIA VRP for non-tankers and tankers, the ships must have the capacity on board to contain operational discharges of 7 drums (1,100 litres) and 12 drums (1,900 litres), respectively (7 drums for ships under 400' LOA and 12 drums for ships over 400' LOA).
4. Under the VRP approved by the USCG, which has been in force since 8 August 2005 for non-tankers and tankers, the same regulations as under the California VRP apply to ships calling at ports in the USA, namely: capacity on board to contain operational discharges of 7 drums and 12 drums, respectively.
