Rope

At HOAC Marine, you can buy rope for inland waterways, marine and offshore use. From floating mooring lines and heavy-duty HMPE lines to braided nylon, manila and schooner yarn. Many lines can be ordered by the metre, while others are sold by the roll or spool. In our workshop in Harlingen, we cut to length and, upon request, splice in an eye, thimble or sleeve. Not sure about the diameter? Use the line finder or read how to measure rope correctly.

Which rope is right for your boat?

The material determines how a line behaves. Choose based on stretch, buoyancy, weight and strength, and how often you use the line.

  1. Polyolefin and PP/PEare lightweight, float and do not absorb water. With around 14 to 16 percent stretch at break, they absorb shocks well. That is why they are popular as mooring lines in inland shipping.
  2. Polyester/polyolefincombines these properties with higher strength per diameter.
  3. Nylonstretches a lot and is strong, but sinks. Suitable where you want a lot of shock absorption.
  4. HMPEis the strongest material per kilo: low stretch, floating and often a replacement for steel wire. View our HMPE rope.
  5. Manilais a natural fibre with a traditional look and good grip, for example as a throwing line.

In our article Which mooring rope should you choose?we compare the materials side by side.

Braided or laid rope

Braided rope, such as a 12-strand line, is round and stable and does not twist. It runs smoothly over a winch drum. Laid ropeusually consists of three strands, is more affordable and is easy to split yourself.

Per metre, per roll or per spool

Many lines are ordered per metre: you enter the length and we cut it. Do you need a whole roll or spool, or large quantities? Add the line to your quote list, and we will provide a custom price.

Splicing done in our own workshop

We make eyes, thimbles and thimbles in our own workshop in Harlingen. A splice retains much more of the strength than a knot. This makes the line ready to use on board. Fasteners, thimbles and shackles can be found under lifting and mooring equipment.

Breaking strength and working load

For every line, the breaking strength per diameter is stated in kN. The safe working load is considerably lower. Read more in Breaking strength, working load and rejection.

Frequently asked questions
